The duration of the project FEMPOW is planned for 30 months (2,5 year). Within this period heuristic and archival research, public outreach activities and scientific dissemination shall be undertaken. In order to manage the project, work shall be structured into 3 main objectives:

1. Database

 

The primary aim of my project is to create the database of the charters issued by consorts of rulers from the House of Luxemburg from 1292 until 1442 whereby the co-issuance, intervention- and consensus-clauses in king’s/emperor’s charters have to be included and analysed. Although many of the charters and charter collections have been published as in print or online (especially in the framework of RI), the output documenting the political activity of female rulers and consorts has never been reflected as integral part of governance. The quantum of data can be directly gathered and analysed, eventually emended or complemented in the digital environment, which allows e.g. to create the links between databases/online sources and editorial works, to gain geo-referenced information and to identify persons.The estimated number of charters covering the timeframe is approximately 1200–1500 items; thereof 30% are published mainly in RI as print publication and/or online, 15% in other editorial works, 15%-20% my existing corpus, 35%-40% have to be specified.

 

2. Comparative perspective(s)

 

Within the international workshop should be interrogate the main methodological approaches and theories on late medieval queenship / female governance in recent historiography. The workshop proceedings should examine the variability of the concepts of female governance and methodological approaches in the European historiography. Within the planned workshop the following axes will be addressed:- Ruling practices in gender comparative perspective

– Methods, Theories and Sources : their possibilities and limits

– Female souvereigns and expression of the power

 

 

3. Queenship an Power in Composite Monarchy

 

The monograph study, the major result of my project, should address this desideratum and bring a new light to essential problem. This can be achieved on the basis of detailed quantitative and qualitative analysis of the diplomatic material, in comparison with the charter issuance of male and female sovereigns (royal couple) and by evaluating the collected data of long-term period. On the other hand some aspects have to be taken into account such as: theoretical framework of gender studies and women’s history, concepts of female regency in medieval literature and narratives.
